Parts of Shrewsbury town centre to remain traffic-free for four more weeks
Current arrangements making parts of Shrewsbury town centre traffic-free
are to remain in place, following the Government’s decision to keep
restrictions in place for another four weeks. The social distancing measures mean that High Street and Shoplatch are
closed to vehicles every day between 11am and 4pm. During these times
Wyle Cop is closed uphill but remains open downhill.

Dangerous builidng on St Michaels Street to be demolised, as road remains closedWork to protect the public and neighbouring properties from a
privately-owned house at risk of collapse in Shrewsbury, continues at
pace. Shropshire Council had taken urgent measures to protect the
public from the property at 110 St Michael’s Street from what could be
in imminent danger of collapse. The council is working with the owner to
resolve the matter as quickly as possible. Council officers are liaising with specialists to create a plan to allow for a controlled demolition. The property, which is not listed and had a number of rented rooms, has
been evacuated and the residents have been put into
emergency accommodation or staying with relatives. St Michaels Street remains closed with diversions in place.

Shrewsbury MP apologises for bullying staff while under influence of alcohol
Shrewsbury's MP Daniel Kawczynski has been forced to make a humiliating
public apology for bullying parliamentary committee staff as he
struggled with IT issues. The incident occurred in April 2020, as Parliament was adapting to new remote working during the coronavirus lockdown. Speaking in the Commons, Mr Kawczynski said: "I did not swear nor raise
my voice but my behaviour led to two complaints. I have reflected on my
behaviour, I accept it constituted bullying and as such was highly
inexcusable."

Shropshire StarFreedom Day delay is huge blow to Shropshire businesses
The postponement of the so-called Freedom Day has been met with disappointment by a Shropshire business leader. Kevin Lockwood, manager of Shrewsbury Shopping Centres and director of
Shrewsbury BID, said: “It’s disappointing, but what we expected given
the increases in Delta variant cases." The
decision to delay until July 19 means capacity limits for pubs,
restaurants, sporting events, theatres and cinemas stay in place.
Nightclubs, which had been desperately hoping to reopen their doors from
Monday, will still be required to stay closed. The
move has come as a huge blow to the hospitality sector in particular,
which had been urging the Government to stay on track with the June 21
date.
